All About Alpaca Air

When we first got our hands on this yarn, we knew right away it wasn’t your everyday fibre. We call it Alpaca Air, but you might hear others call it a “blown yarn.” Either way, it’s something special.

Here’s what makes it unique: instead of the usual spinning and plying, the fibres are gently blown into a fine, hollow mesh tube. This gives it a light, lofty structure – like a soft cloud of yarn – while still keeping it warm and wonderfully cosy. It’s made from a beautiful blend of baby alpaca and cotton, and you can really feel the difference. The cotton mesh gives the yarn stability, while the alpaca brings that lovely softness and a gentle, slightly fuzzy halo.

We especially love that it’s non-superwash, meaning it hasn’t been treated with chemicals to make it machine-washable. It keeps the fibres natural, just the way we like it - warm, breathable, and better for the planet.

Alpaca Air comes in two natural shades: a soft white and a mellow grey. When we saw the grey, we knew it had the potential for something special. So we decided to hand-dye it in subtle tonal shades that add extra depth and character. For the white base, we went in the opposite direction and let our creativity run wild, creating vibrant variegated colourways that pop with colour.

This yarn is perfect for those projects where you want warmth without weight - think drapey cardigans, soft shawls, lightweight sweaters, or snuggly accessories like hats and cowls. It’s got great stitch definition for simple and textured stitches, but with that lovely fuzzy halo, we’d suggest skipping the intricate lace and heavy cables.

To make it easy for you to dive in, we’ve put together a little collection of knitting and crochet patterns that we think pair perfectly with Alpaca Air. Whether you’re a knitter or a crocheter (or both!), there’s something here to get your creativity flowing.

We hope you’ll love Alpaca Air as much as we do. It’s not just yarn - it’s like wrapping yourself in a warm, gentle hug.
