Our New Collection: Colour Theory

Let’s be honest : “colour theory” sounds kind of serious, right? Like something involving a whiteboard and a pointer and a whole lot of rules. But in reality, it’s just a way of understanding why some colour combos make you do a little happy dance… and others feel like they’re arguing in the corner.

It’s the reason a soft grey can make a bright red shine. Why olive and rust feel timeless and grounded. Why some shades just click, not because they match perfectly, but because they balance each other out in just the right way.

This spring, we found ourselves back in our colour library, digging through our own history of shades — the ones we’ve loved, the ones we’ve left behind, and the ones we’ve quietly side-eyed for years. We started noticing the gaps. Colours we’ve avoided, not because we didn’t like them, but because we hadn’t quite figured out how to make them feel ours. They didn’t fit the usual moody Zakami vibe. Some we’d tested, tweaked, and tucked away, just waiting for the right recipe.

Well… this is that recipe.

Our new collection, Colour Theory, is a celebration of those “missing” colours. The overlooked hues hanging out at the edges of our palette, finally ready for their moment. These shades are a little unexpected, a little playful. They’re made for bold colourwork, for mixing textures, for imagining that first crisp autumn jumper or a giant, squishy shawl while you’re still knitting under the summer sun.

When we’re dyeing, we’re not just thinking about colour, we’re thinking about feeling. A cool, desaturated blue might carry the hush of morning mist. A punchy coral might catch that final glow before sunset. Some colours feel like joy. Some feel like exhale. And when you bring them together — especially in ways you didn’t expect — that’s where the magic happens.

So yes, colour theory has its roots in wheels and opposites and balance. But for us, it’s really about exploration. About following your instinct, playing with contrast, and finding beauty in the in-between.

Colour Theory isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being curious.
