The Importance of Swatches

Same Needles, Same Stitch Count… But Different Sizes?! Let’s Talk About Swatching

Have you ever followed a pattern exactly, used the recommended needle size, cast on the same number of stitches, and ended up with a swatch that’s way off? You're not alone. That’s the mysterious (and slightly magical) world of swatching.

We recently did a side-by-side comparison using five of our most popular yarn bases, all knitted with the same needle size (3.75mm) and the same stitch count (30 stitches). And the results? They weren’t identical.

Look at the results of our experiment down below!

Why the Difference?

Because gauge isn't just about the yarn weight.

Even if two yarns are labelled the same (say, both "DK" or "worsted") their actual thickness, fibre composition, twist, and how they behave when blocked can vary widely. Add in each knitter’s unique tension and style, and you’ve got a recipe for very different swatches.

Some factors at play:

  • Wool, silk, cotton, and blends all behave differently.
  • Some of us are tight knitters; others (like me) are looser.
  • High-twist vs. low-twist, smooth vs. fuzzy—these all affect gauge.
  • A must-do. Washing and blocking your swatch can reveal how the yarn really wants to behave.

Suri DK vs Alpaca Air

  • Suri DK: ~18cm wide
  • Alpaca Air: ~15cm wide

Suri DK knits up as a soft, fluffy worsted DK, while Alpaca Air (although technically sport weight at 300m/100g) behaves more like a light DK.

Why Swatching Matters

Swatching might feel like a chore, but it’s the best way to ensure your project ends up the size you want it to be. If you're following a pattern, especially for garments, checking your gauge is non-negotiable.

Don’t be afraid to adjust your needle size to match the pattern gauge. The recommended needle is just a starting point—your hands make the final call.

We list mill-recommended gauges and needle suggestions on our website for each base, but every maker is different. Swatching lets you meet your yarn where you are.

In these example you are seeing the difference, but spoiler alert: I am a loose knitter! Take that into account!

Alpaca Air vs Cashmere DK

Both swatches came out around 15cm wide.

These two behave very similarly in gauge, giving you options depending on your fibre preference.

Swatching is Magic — and Essential

Every knitter’s tension is unique. Always check your gauge if you're following a pattern, and don’t be afraid to adjust your needle size to suit your own style.

You’ll find mill-recommended gauges and needle suggestions on our website, but ultimately, your hands decide. Stitch patterns, fibres, and blocking all play a part.

NSW Merino Fingering vs Alpaca Air

  • NSW Merino Fingering: ~11.5cm
  • Alpaca Air: ~15cm

Even though both were knitted on the same needles with 30 stitches, the difference is clear.
The NSW Merino is much finer and more compact.

In Short:

Same needles + same stitches ≠ same size — and that’s exactly why swatching matters.

It’s the best way to get a feel for your yarn, avoid surprises, and create something that fits just right.

Alpaca Air vs Alpaca & Linen DK

Another perfect match!

If you love the airy feel of Alpaca Air but want a little rustic structure, the Alpaca & Linen DK is a beautiful alternative.
